Senior Manager, Program & Match Activities

Having worked for Big Brothers Big Sisters Southeastern PA (BBBS SEPA) for almost 14 years, I’ve had the chance to meet many people.  With each person I meet, comes a story and for various reasons, every single one is memorable.  One particular story that stands out for me is one that was shared during our Big Stories Breakfast in 2011. A speaker named Sean spoke about his time as a Little Brother in our program, honored his Big Brother Mike (who was in attendance at the Breakfast), and also talked about his new experience giving back as a Big Brother with BBBS SEPA.

Listening to Sean speak, I was taken back to my early years with BBBS SEPA, as I was the one to introduce him to his Big Brother Mike.  At that time, Sean lived with his mom and simply wanted to spend time with a guy and through a football around.  Sadly, he lived in an area where we did not have many male volunteers and he had to wait a couple years for a Big Brother.  The wait was worth it however, as Sean and Mike made a great match and remained in touch long after Sean graduated High School and their official SEPA relationship ended.

The funny part of the story is that when I first met Sean he was shorter than me, but quickly grew to around the same height of his Big Brother – well over 6 feet tall.  There is debate as to whether they are both 6’7″ or if one is slightly taller at 6’8”.  In the picture of the pair and me, Mike and Sean were standing on the ballroom floor – I, however, stood on our Breakfast stage simply to be able to look them directly in the eye.
