Ben & Ithaan

Matched 2014
    Philadelphia County, PA

Big Brother Ben and Little Brother Ithaan share three major interests: the NBA, the NFL and Buffalo wings. Matched in our community-based program, the pair most commonly bonds while taking in sporting events and great food, and they are enjoying every minute of it.

Ben recounts one time in particular when he tricked Ithaan into thinking their next outing would be attending a spelling bee, in which Ithaan would be a participant. Ithaan was obviously bummed, but went along with it. On their subway ride to the “spelling bee,” he talked to his Big about how unsure he was of his spelling abilities and he tried to hide his nerves. When they got off of the subway, Ithaan saw the Eagles’ stadium and his Big Brother handed him a ticket to that day’s game. The look on Ithaan’s face was priceless and he could barely contain his excitement. He had never been to a football game before and best of all… he didn’t have to spell anything!

Ithaan’s mother, Donna, says getting involved with Big Brothers Big Sisters has been just as rewarding as she had hoped. “He does have me and his dad and his siblings, but we wanted him to have someone there for him one-on-one,” she explained. Ben has been able to provide this type of special mentorship and the results are quite clear. In less than a year, significant changes have been seen at school and at home, as Ithaan is now more social and outgoing when interacting with his peers. “He is more active and isn’t always playing video games,” Donna added. “He likes to go outside and throw a ball around and enjoys more types of activities.”

Ithaan is certainly on the right path and continues to learn from his Big Brother more than just the rules of football. They play catch, meet new people, eat ice cream and simply enjoy spending quality time together. Ithaan has the type of mentorship and role model that his mother had hoped for and she said, without a doubt, her son was well-matched. He talks about his Big Brother often, with a huge smile on his face, and his mother noted that, “he seems so happy whenever telling stories about the time they spend together.”

In addition to sports, Big Brother Ben ensures that academics remain an area of focus for his Little. He asks Ithaan about school and makes sure that he continues to be a good student. “Ithaan’s really intelligent and I give him math problems that he’s really quick to solve,” Ben said. “I want him to find something he’s passionate about and be successful.” With the continued support of his family and Big Brother, we know Ithaan is on the right path.
