We’re proud of our college and Beyond School Walls programs starting back up this fall! Big Brother Michael and Little Brother Jerome’s story shows just how impactful mentoring is for both our Littles and Bigs. He shared this story with us back in May as he prepared for graduation.

“As a senior with graduation almost two weeks away, there are plenty of ‘last’ times these days for my college career. From my last class as an undergraduate, to my last research paper, things are finally starting to come to a close. However, none of these things is more emotional than the ‘last’ I had to experience today.

For two years, I have been volunteering with Big Brothers Big Sisters Southeastern PA, through which I was matched with my Little Brother, a West Philadelphia grade school student. Whether we talked about his favorite TV shows, built the greatest Lego towers, or practiced our basketball trick shots, we always managed to put life behind us for an hour each week. I’ve watched my Little grow and mature into the strapping young lad he is today. But now that I’m graduating, today was finally time to say goodbye. My only regret throughout the program is that I hadn’t signed up earlier. His curious mind and his caring attitude has made me want to be a better person, something I will never forget about our match.

I don’t post things like this to get a million likes. The message I hope to convey, is that community service can be rewarding beyond your imagination. There are plenty of people around the world who, in some shape or form, can use your help. The effort you put in toward helping those in need is inevitably paid back bountifully. I recommend to anybody and everybody that they take even an hour out of their busy weeks to find time to volunteer and be part of something bigger than themselves.”
