About the Children in our Programs
We enroll children between the ages of 7-14 years old.  Our Littles come from a variety of different life experiences but all have one thing in common…they want a Big!

Volunteer Time Commitment
Bigs and Littles are expected to meet 2-4 times a month.  We ask volunteers to make an initial one year commitment, although many mentoring matches continue after that first year.

Our Matching Process
We review all the Littles in our waiting pool to find the best “match” for you, considering factors including: geography, personality, hobbies and interests, schedules and preferences.

What Bigs and Littles Do Together

You and your Little can share the kinds of activities you already like to do. Play sports together. Go on a hike. Read books. Eat a pizza with extra anchovies.

Aside from the activities you and your Little plan together based on your common interests, Big Brothers Big Sisters Independence Region’s Match Activities team hosts free or low cost activities for Bigs and Littles across the area throughout the year. Recent activities have included free tickets to 76ers and Phillies games, ice skating at Penn’s Landing, passes to local museums and everything in between.

The Volunteer Process

  1. Fill out our volunteer form.
  2. A Big Brothers Big Sisters representative will contact you to schedule you for a Volunteer Information Session to determine if this is the right volunteer experience for you.
  3. Interested volunteers schedule an interview, complete background check forms and provide references to ensure their safety and the safety of the children we serve.
  4. After your interview is completed and forms are turned in we begin to look for the right Little to match you to and begin your mentoring experience.
